A New Year, A New Look for Britain’s Economy?

Welcome to 2010 and what is for many the first day back at work since the Christmas break.  For many, this first Monday back is a struggle, trying to get back to the routine of a normal working day after days of lazing, sleeping in and eating far more than is strictly necessary.

But what does the year have in store?  One key event for the country in many respects will be the general election, due to take place in June.  This could not only mean a big change after 13 years of Labour government – that is, if the Conservatives win – but also a key moment for many economic factors which affect the country.

A core factor is the country’s currency, the pound.  Since the end of 2008 it has had a tough year against a number of major currencies.  Against the euro it has had its most trying year, reaching near parity for an extended period.  Some currency exchange experts even predict that it might tumble to below parity in 2010, unless a strong direction is showed with either the current government or a new one.

As far as the general economy is concerned, many hope that at least the big picture shows an upward trend.  If Boxing Day shopping figures are anything to go by, we’re on good course!
